Augustin Lesage, the Spirit-Guided Painter, in 2 Minutes

In a quick visit, Beaux Arts Magazine traces the singular journey of Augustin Lesage, a miner turned painter under the influence of occult voices.

Augustin Lesage (1876-1954) remains one of the most fascinating figures of spirit art. This coal miner from northern France, with no artistic training, claimed to paint under the dictation of spirits, who allegedly appeared to him during a séance in 1911. Over nearly four decades, he produced about 800 canvases, often monumental, characterized by complex ornamental symmetry and striking geometric precision.
