ATHENS, Aug 21, 2026 — Greece, plagued each summer by devastating forest fires, has announced the deployment of a vast fire safety system aimed at protecting its major archaeological sites. The initiative, revealed today, responds to the need to preserve a globally recognized heritage threatened by increasingly extreme weather conditions.

The system includes thermal sensors, surveillance drones, and rapid-response teams, which will be installed at iconic sites such as the Acropolis of Athens, Olympia, and Delphi. Greek authorities did not disclose the exact investment amount, but the project is part of a broader plan to modernize the protection of national heritage.

The announcement follows several summers marked by exceptionally intense wildfires that have ravaged forests and at times approached archaeological areas. In 2021, the Peloponnese was already affected, and the burning of an ancient site had alerted conservators. Greece, which derives a significant part of its economy from cultural tourism, considers the protection of these ruins a strategic priority.

Developed in collaboration with experts in advanced technology, the system will enable early detection of fire outbreaks and more efficient coordination of emergency responses. It complements traditional measures, such as brush clearing and human surveillance, already in place at some sites.

Authorities say the system should be fully operational before the next summer season. It could later be extended to other sites, notably in Crete and the Aegean islands.
