Gustave Moreau's Largest Drawing, Hidden for Nearly a Century, Unveiled in Paris

Gustave Moreau (1826-1898), a leading figure of French Symbolism, is being celebrated this year for the bicentenary of his birth. While his enigmatic paintings such as "The Apparition" are famous, his equally essential drawing practice still has surprises in store. Thus, an extraordinary drawing, the largest ever executed by the artist, has emerged from nearly a century of obscurity.

Measuring over three meters high and more than two meters wide, this masterpiece was brought to light during an inventory campaign at the Mobilier national, the French institution responsible for preserving state furniture and artworks. The piece, whose dimensions exceed everything Moreau produced on paper, had been relegated to storage, invisible to the public and researchers alike.

Restored between April and July 2025, the drawing was subsequently presented at the Musée Gustave Moreau, located in the artist's former studio in Paris, during the bicentenary spring season. The rediscovery has sparked keen interest among art historians, who see it as a key to understanding the master's most monumental projects.
