Rethinking City and Land from the Suburbs: 'New Town, Interference' at Yokohama Civic Art Gallery Azamino

From October 10 to November 3, 2026, the Yokohama Civic Art Gallery Azamino presents 'New Town, Interference: The Relationship Between the City and Us,' the seventeenth edition of its 'Azamino Contemporary' series. The exhibition brings together seven artists and collectives to examine how images of cities and territories have shifted, and how our bonds to places have been formed and unsettled.

Participants include Asako Ishizaki, Kawa, Kyoko Taniyama, Transfield Studio (Riku Yamakawa and Yuko Takeda), Haruya Nakajima, Osamu Matsuda, and Koji Yamaguchi. Together they show about 100 works—videos, installations, paintings, and photographs—organized around keywords such as 'interfere,' 'trace,' and 'carry.' Several pieces were created specifically for the venue, including a large installation resulting from research in the Azamino neighborhood and new paintings made during walks through the city.

The exhibition sheds light on Japanese new towns, those large residential developments built from the 1960s onward on metropolitan fringes. The artists uncover physical and mnemonic traces, revealing layers of history beneath ordinary landscapes. The display also includes documents from excavations at the Akada burial mound, reminding that this suburban area was inhabited long before modern urbanization.

A parallel program features artist talks on October 10 and 11, curator-led tours on October 24 and 25, and a walking workshop through the district on October 31, guided by Haruya Nakajima and Asako Ishizaki. Admission is 500 yen for adults, with free entry for children under 12 and on the museum's anniversary days, October 24 and 25.
