Three Candidates Revealed to Succeed JR East's Suica Penguin

The Japanese public will vote to choose the new face of the transport cards, after 25 years of the iconic penguin's reign.

The Suica penguin, the beloved mascot of East Japan Railway Company (JR East) rechargeable transport cards, is preparing to bow out. After 25 years of service, it will officially retire at the end of March 2027. To find a successor, JR East has unveiled three designs by young Japanese creators, with the winner to be decided by a public vote.

The announcement, made on Tuesday, 8 September 2026, marks a key step in the transition. The three candidates, whose names and visuals have not yet been detailed, were selected for their contemporary approach. The vote, open to users, is expected to take place in the coming months, ahead of an official handover in 2027.

Launched in 2001, the Suica card revolutionised daily travel in Japan by enabling contactless validation. Its penguin, created by illustrator Chiharu Sakazaki, quickly became an icon of Japanese pop culture, on a par with regional mascots. Its retirement, announced last year, triggered a wave of nostalgia among users.

The succession comes at a time when mascots play a central role in the image of companies and regions in Japan. The choice of the next penguin will be closely watched, as it must embody both the Suica legacy and a new generation of travellers.

While the exact voting schedule has not been specified, the successor's appointment is expected before March 2027. Until then, the public is invited to follow the three finalists' progress on JR East's official channels.
