Playable Replica of Michael Heizer's City: Land Art Meets Video Game

Digital artist Lily Belmira, based in Tulsa, Oklahoma, has created a free video game that recreates the environment of City, Michael Heizer's monumental land art sculpture built from 1970 to 2022 in the Nevada desert. The project, available online, allows anyone to virtually explore this earthwork, which stretches over two kilometers and is normally difficult to access.

In a blog post, Belmira explains that she conceived the game as a "way to undermine its power"—a reference to the almost sacred and inaccessible nature of the original work, which is open to the public only by appointment and after a long walk. By making the piece playable and free, the artist questions notions of authority, ownership, and aesthetic experience in contemporary art.

City is one of the most ambitious works in the history of land art. Michael Heizer, born in 1944, worked on it for over fifty years, shaping hills, craters, and geometric structures in the desert. The work is managed by the Triple Aught Foundation, which ensures its conservation and limited access.

Belmira's approach fits into a broader trend of artists using video games as an artistic medium, creating virtual spaces that engage with physical works. This gesture raises questions about the democratization of art and how digital technologies can transform our relationship with monumental works.

Since the game is free and accessible to all, it could reach a much larger audience than those who can visit City in person.
