Presentation

The École supérieure d'art et design de Saint-Étienne (ESADSE) is a public higher art school, heir to a long tradition of art education in a city marked by industry and technical know-how. It is now united with the Cité du design within a single public institution, which constitutes its major distinctiveness in the French landscape: students move through a place that combines school, resource center, workshops, and exhibition programming.

Disciplines

The school awards the national diplomas of the network of higher art schools: the DNA (bachelor's level) after three years, then the DNSEP (master's level) in two years, in the Art and Design options. After a shared preparatory year, students move toward one of the two options, with specialized areas and tracks (object design, graphic design, space and service design depending on the year, contemporary visual arts practices).

Strengths

The technical workshops are an asset: volume, wood and metal, ceramics, screen printing and printing, photography, video, digital. Research holds an important place there, backed by the Cité du design and its research units, with themes related to digital technology, materials, and the social issues of design.

Saint-Étienne, a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network for design, hosts the Biennale internationale Design, with which the school is closely associated — an opportunity for students to take part in exhibited projects and meet international professionals.
