ESAL - École Supérieure d'Art de Lorraine - Site d'Epinal

Presentation

ESAL — École Supérieure d'Art de Lorraine is a public institution of higher art education under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture, born from the merging of the art schools of Metz and Épinal. It operates on two sites, and the Épinal site retains its own identity, on the scale of a deliberately compact structure.

Training

The Épinal site prepares students for the Diplôme National d'Art (DNA), a diploma equivalent to a bachelor's degree, after a general first year followed by a curriculum in the Art option. Teaching combines theoretical courses (art history, aesthetics, visual culture), technical workshops and individual supervision of artistic research, with semester reviews before the teaching staff.

The practices covered include drawing, painting, three-dimensional work and installation, photography, video and sound, as well as printmaking techniques and printed imagery — a field that echoes the graphic and editorial tradition of the town of Épinal.

Strengths

The site's small scale fosters close supervision and regular access to workshops. The school relies on workshops with guest artists, exhibitions and projects carried out with cultural stakeholders in the region (museums, art centers, associative structures). International mobility and inter-site exchanges complete the course of study.
