ESMA — Montpellier

Founded in Montpellier in the mid-1980s, ESMA (École Supérieure des Métiers Artistiques) is a private institution that has become one of the French references for training in 3D animated film and digital special effects (VFX). The school has since expanded to several campuses in France, with the Montpellier site remaining the historic location.

Disciplines

In addition to animation and VFX, ESMA offers, depending on the campus, programs in graphic design, interior architecture / space design, and photography. The teaching approach is highly career-oriented: professional pipeline software (modeling, rigging, animation, lighting, compositing), teamwork, and adherence to production constraints similar to those found in studios.

Strengths

The animation program concludes with a graduation film made as a group, an emblematic exercise of the school: these short films are screened at festivals and contribute significantly to ESMA's visibility among French and international studios. The school is a member of RECA (Réseau des écoles françaises de cinéma d'animation), reflecting its integration into the sector's professional ecosystem.
