ESMOD Paris

Founded in 1841 by Alexis Lavigne, tailor and inventor of the flexible tape measure, ESMOD is considered the oldest fashion school in the world. A private institution, it built its reputation on demanding technical teaching, closely combining stylisme (design, drawing, artistic direction) and modélisme (pattern-making, draping, cutting, garment construction) — a dual competence that remains its hallmark.

The pedagogy is project-based: collections, prototypes, professional juries, end-of-course fashion show. Students learn to translate a creative intention into a genuinely realizable garment, which explains graduates' good integration into style offices and workshops.

Alongside the creative curriculum, the ISEM division covers fashion management professions: buying, merchandising, marketing, communication, collection management. Specializations exist depending on the campus (lingerie, knitwear, accessories, menswear, sustainable development).

ESMOD is also an international network: beyond Paris, the school is established in several French cities and has partner campuses abroad, notably in Asia, Europe and the Middle East, which fosters exchanges and multicultural projects.

Among the best-known alumni are Olivier Rousteing, artistic director of Balmain, and the couturier Franck Sorbier.
