Overview

The Université catholique de l'Ouest (UCO), historically called "Facultés libres de l'Ouest," is a private higher education institution of general interest founded in Angers in the 19th century. Its main campus occupies the university district in the center of Angers, with associated sites in several cities in western France.

It is therefore not an art school in the sense of the écoles supérieures d'art (DNA/DNSEP) nor a private design school: UCO is a multidisciplinary university awarding national degrees (licences, masters) under agreement with the affiliated public university.

Artistic Programs

Art-related teaching is carried out by the faculty dedicated to humanities and social sciences. It offers notably licences in arts plastiques, arts (tracks that may combine several artistic fields), and histoire de l'art et archéologie, accessible via Parcoursup.

The approach here is predominantly academic: supervised studio practice, but also aesthetics, art history, research methodology, general culture, and languages. These programs classically lead toward master's degrees (research, mediation, heritage, teaching professions) rather than direct entry into a creative studio career.
