La Fémis

La Fémis (École nationale supérieure des métiers de l'image et du son) is the French public film school, located rue Francœur in the 18th arrondissement of Paris. An institution under the supervision of the ministère de la Culture, it succeeded in 1986 the IDHEC, founded during the Second World War.

The school trains students in the main professions of film and audiovisual work through specialized departments: réalisation, scénario, image, son, montage, production, décor, as well as scripte and distribution-exploitation. The pedagogy is based on collective practice: students from the different tracks collaborate on exercises and then on graduation films, under conditions close to a professional set.

What sets it apart

Admission is through a highly selective competitive exam, open after prior higher education studies. The deliberately small class sizes, supervision by working professionals, and access to comprehensive technical equipment explain the school's central place in the landscape of French cinema and its integration into international networks of film schools.

La Fémis also offers complementary curricula and programs (short training courses, schemes for creation and distribution), as well as international partnerships.

Alumni

Among its graduates: François Ozon, Céline Sciamma, Rebecca Zlotowski, Alice Winocour, Thomas Cailley, Julia Ducournau. The IDHEC, which it succeeded, had notably trained Alain Resnais, Louis Malle, Costa-Gavras and Claire Denis.
