Nantes Université

Nantes Université

Nantes Université is a public multidisciplinary university, one of the major higher education hubs in western France. Since 2022, it has brought together under a single institution the former Université de Nantes and several constituent institutions, including Centrale Nantes, the École nationale supérieure d'architecture de Nantes and the École des beaux-arts Nantes Saint-Nazaire — an original configuration that brings together university, engineering, architecture and artistic creation within the same ecosystem.

Art-related programs

On the university side, the offering mainly falls under the UFR dedicated to history, arts and sociology, notably with the licence Histoire de l'art et archéologie. It covers the history of works and images from Antiquity to the contemporary period, archaeological methods, iconographic analysis and heritage issues. Pathways continue at the master's level, leading toward careers in research, mediation, conservation, museums, the art market or preventive archaeology.

Note: this is a theoretical and academic curriculum, not a course in artistic practice. Students seeking a creative studio should instead turn to the école des beaux-arts, while the university offers access to libraries, research laboratories and the student life of a general-purpose campus.

Context

Nantes offers a rich field of study: medieval and industrial heritage, an art museum, contemporary art institutions and artistic events in public space regularly feed into the teaching and internships.
