Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne — Arts

A university path for art

The université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne offers one of the leading French university curricula devoted to the arts. It stands out for the coexistence of two complementary units: the UFR d'Arts plastiques et sciences de l'art, and the UFR d'Histoire de l'art et archéologie, alongside programs in aesthetics and cinema.

Unlike art schools (DNA/DNSEP) or private schools, this is a classic academic path: licence, master, doctorat, with validation through ECTS and a strong theoretical dimension (art history, aesthetics, image theory, research methodology).

Disciplines and strengths

In visual arts, the program combines studio practice with theoretical writing: painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, video, digital arts, installation, design, depending on the tracks and instructors. Theses combine an artistic production with written reflection.

In art history and archaeology, the offering covers a very broad spectrum, from Antiquity to contemporary art, with career paths toward heritage professions, museums, the art market, and research. The university also prepares students for competitive exams (teaching, conservation).

Courses are spread across several Parisian sites, including the centre Saint-Charles (15e) for visual arts and the Institut d'art et d'archéologie as well as the Galerie Colbert for art history.

Who it suits

Students who are self-directed, comfortable with reading and writing, and who want a recognized, affordable education oriented toward research, teaching, or heritage — rather than the intensive studio supervision found in an art school.
