A university born from experimentation

Université Paris 8 is the direct heir of the Centre universitaire expérimental de Vincennes, created after May 1968, before its move to Saint-Denis in the early 1980s. This lineage still marks its artistic teaching: significant importance given to critical theory, research-creation, and practices outside traditional academic frameworks.

Disciplines

The UFR Arts, philosophie, esthétique brings together a broad set of departments: visual arts, cinema, theater, dance, music, photography, and digital arts. Paris 8 is notably recognized for:

• its Arts et technologies de l'image (ATI) department, one of the historic French university programs in computer-generated imagery and 3D animation;
• its département danse, rare in France in offering a complete university curriculum from undergraduate to doctoral level;
• a strong tradition in aesthetics and art theory, backed by research laboratories and a doctoral school dedicated to the arts.

Programmes range from licence to doctorate, with masters combining visual practice, theoretical writing, and digital creation. The university framework involves public registration fees and a significant share of personal work: studies here are less supervised than in an art school, but underpinned by a dense theoretical culture.

Figures linked to the institution

Vincennes and later Paris 8 welcomed Gilles Deleuze, Michel Foucault, Jean-François Lyotard, Hélène Cixous, and Jacques Rancière, whose teachings have had a lasting influence on thinking about art and image.
