Université Rennes 2 — Arts plastiques

Presentation

Université Rennes 2 is a French university dedicated to literature, languages, humanities and social sciences, arts and sports sciences. Its arts programs occupy a central place there: visual arts, art history, cinema, theatre, dance and music are taught within a single teaching and research unit, which fosters bridges between practices and disciplinary fields.

The program in visual arts unfolds from the licence to the master's, then to the doctorate, following a university logic that articulates studio practice (drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, video, digital, installation, performance) with theoretical teachings: aesthetics, art history and theory, research methodology. Students learn there as much to produce as to write about their work and to situate their approach.

Strengths

Rennes 2 is recognized for the vitality of its research in the arts: the work carried out around the poetics of creation, image, contemporary practices and digital arts feeds into the master's and doctoral teachings. The university has an exhibition space on its campus, which allows students to confront the practice of showing their work.

The context of Rennes is an asset: the city hosts numerous institutions and festivals linked to contemporary art, image and live performance, as well as a separate school of art, which creates a dense artistic ecosystem.

To note: this is a university program, different from a DNA/DNSEP in an art school, with a more theoretical profile and an opening towards teaching, mediation or research.
