The Université de Strasbourg is a large public multidisciplinary university whose Faculté des arts brings together teaching and research in visual arts, design, music, theatre and cinema. The « arts visuels » division offers an academic program in fine arts, combining studio practice, artistic culture and theoretical reflection.

Disciplines and strengths

The curricula are organized into bachelor's and then master's degrees, with orientations towards fine arts, design, digital imaging and multimedia, as well as pathways towards mediation, teaching and research professions. The training combines workshops (drawing, painting, three-dimensional work, photography, video, digital creation) with courses in art history, aesthetics and art sciences.

The academic grounding is the main distinguishing feature: research thesis, openness to the university's other disciplines, possibility of continuing to a doctorate within the institution's art research laboratories. The faculty also hosts courses in performing arts and musicology, fostering cross-disciplinary projects.

Context

Strasbourg is a university city and a cross-border city, with a dense cultural life (museums, stages, festivals) and immediate proximity to Germany, conducive to international exchanges and mobility programs.

Note: the university is distinct from the HEAR (Haute école des arts du Rhin), an art school in the same city, which is more centered on studio practice and the DNSEP diploma. The two paths correspond to different projects.
