Université d'Artois - Site d'Arras
A multidisciplinary university close to home
Founded in the early 1990s, the Université d'Artois is a public institution spread across several towns in the Nord and Pas-de-Calais regions (Arras, Béthune, Douai, Lens, Liévin). Arras, the university's headquarters, hosts in particular the programs in literature, languages, history, humanities and arts.
The arts in Arras
Artistic education there is carried by the component devoted to literature and arts, with a licence Arts du spectacle at the heart of the offering. The program combines theory and practice: history of theater and performing arts, dramaturgical and film analysis, aesthetics, textual study, workshops in acting, staging and cultural mediation.
This is a university curriculum, not a conservatory-style school: the emphasis is on artistic culture, research and critical writing, alongside practical work. The intended career paths concern cultural administration and production, mediation, teaching, research, or continuing on to a master's degree (arts, cultural professions, teaching professions).
Points of attention
The university relies on research teams in literature, languages and arts, and on a strong regional presence: partnerships with cultural institutions in the region, including the scène nationale d'Arras-Douai and the many festivals of the area.
A good option for students seeking a university education accessible via Parcoursup, with tuition fees at the national rate, rather than a selective art school.
