Université de Bourgogne - site de Dijon

The université de Bourgogne (uB) is a multidisciplinary university whose main campus is located in Dijon, on the Montmuzard site. As in most French universities, arts education there is approached from a theoretical and scientific angle rather than a practical one: students study works, their contexts and methods of analysis, rather than producing a portfolio as in an art school.

Programs and strengths

The Histoire de l'art et archéologie licence, attached to the UFR Sciences humaines, constitutes the main offering in the artistic field. It combines art history (from Antiquity to the contemporary period) with archaeology, with a notable emphasis on regional heritage: Bourgogne offers an exceptional field of study for medieval art, Romanesque and Cistercian architecture, as well as for field archaeology.

The university is backed by research laboratories recognized in archaeology and heritage history, which gives students access to excavation sites, documentary collections and a rich museum environment (musée des Beaux-Arts de Dijon, musée archéologique, a protected heritage sector listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site).

Career paths

These programs lead mainly to master's degrees in art history, archaeology, heritage and cultural mediation, as well as competitive exams for conservation, teaching and research positions.
