A large multidisciplinary university

The Université de Lorraine is a public institution resulting from the merger of the universities of Lorraine, spread mainly between Nancy and Metz. The Nancy site notably hosts the Campus Lettres et Sciences Humaines, which brings together programs in humanities, languages, and social sciences.

Art History and Archaeology

In Nancy, the arts-related offering is centered around the licence Histoire de l'art et archéologie. This is a theoretical university curriculum: the history of art from Antiquity to the contemporary period, archaeological methods, iconography, historiography, an introduction to documentary research and to ancient or modern languages. It is not a program of artistic practice: students wishing to create tend instead to turn to an art school (the ENSAD Nancy, located on site) or to arts plastiques programs.

Further studies generally continue at the master's level (art history, heritage, archaeology, cultural mediation) and open the way to careers in museums, heritage, the art market, mediation and teaching, as well as toward research and civil service examinations in the cultural sector.

Nancy is a remarkable field of study: a classical 18th-century urban ensemble listed as a World Heritage site, Art Nouveau heritage linked to the École de Nancy, and important museum institutions (Musée des Beaux-Arts, Musée de l'École de Nancy, Musée lorrain), frequently drawn upon in coursework and internships.
