Université de Nîmes
A small multidisciplinary university in the South
The Université de Nîmes (UNÎMES) is a public university created in the 2000s from the city's university center. Modest in size compared to neighboring major universities (Montpellier, Avignon, Aix-Marseille), it prides itself on close-knit supervision and small class sizes, spread across several sites in the center of Nîmes, including former heritage buildings that have been renovated.
Arts and design
The arts program is part of a department combining sciences and arts. The licence Arts offers university-level teaching combining studio practice, visual culture, art history, and approaches to design. It covers drawing, color, image, photography, video, and volume, as well as project methods and critical analysis of artworks.
What sets Nîmes apart is the importance given to design: the university develops programs and research activity around design, innovation, and social uses, with work carried out in connection with local partners (local authorities, companies, cultural institutions).
What to remember
This is a university track, distinct from that of an art school (the ESBAN, école supérieure des beaux-arts, is also present in Nîmes): the emphasis here is on theory, method, and research as much as on studio work. A relevant choice for those considering a master's degree in arts, design, mediation, or cultural professions, or pursuing long-term studies at university.
