The contemporary counterpoint highlights Vija Celmins, the artist who has been developing since the late 1960s a highly precise body of work centered on surfaces: ocean, desert, sky or snow, which she calls “impossible images,” devoid of spatial markers, immersing the viewer in the infinite. Her works, created between 1971 and 2000, employ various techniques (drawing, painting, printmaking, woodcut) and play on flatness and illusion. Presented in the pronaos and the contemporary room of the museum, these pieces engage in dialogue with Monet's Nymphéas and invite an attentive and silent experience.
