The musée Delacroix presents a new hanging exploring the animal world of Eugène Delacroix, on the occasion of the acquisition of two studies of horses, recently restored. Exhibited for the first time at the museum, the two studies of stallions, a chestnut and a golden chestnut, testify to Delacroix’s keen interest in the horse and its representation. For the Romantic painter, horses, lions and tigers constitute an object of study and a subject that he stages in numerous paintings, lithographs, decors... throughout his career. The horses he saw during his journey to Maroc in 1832 helped nourish his imagination around the horseman, whether a soldier or a participant in a fantasia. The paintings that Delacroix considered as studies were not intended to be exhibited or sold, but to serve him as reference and source of inspiration. This temporary presentation attaches particular importance to the painter's creative process.
