Deleon Bigwoods : chroniques d'un village jamaïcain

Memories of a Jamaican rural community gathered around its sound system. Between 1991 and 2025, I photographed daily life in Deleon Bigwoods, a small village in the hills of Westmoreland, Jamaica. Every evening, a bar-grocery store became the beating heart of the community around its sound system: the "Prosperous". These photographs tell the story of Reggae Dancehall as much as the memory of a rural world now undergoing profound transformation. I had never considered exhibiting them. The passage of Hurricane Melissa in October 2025 upended this certainty. Several of the photographed locations were destroyed. The exhibition brings together portraits and everyday scenes, punctuated in the evenings by a massive, homemade sound system. Those who wish to extend this encounter can take part in local initiatives through the organization Jah Works Experience, which has been committed for many years to rural co-development in Jamaica.
