DÍA DE MUERTOS

DÍA DE MUERTOS
Paris Open Data (ODbL) · © Marta Nascimento

Through her photo exhibition, Marta Nascimento takes us to Mexico, where she captured the intensity of the Día de Muertos, between quiet contemplation and popular jubilation. A sensitive immersion into one of Latin America's most emblematic rituals. In our Éphémère Galerie of Comptoir des Voyages and along rue Saint-Victor in Paris, discover Día de Muertos, the exhibition by artist Marta Nascimento. Originally from Rio de Janeiro, Marta Nascimento studied journalism before heading to Amazonie to document the social tensions of this unique region. For twenty years, she followed the economic and social upheavals in Amérique Latine and Europe, shedding light on the repercussions of globalization. Her work has been published in the French and international press. In parallel, she explores new narrative forms and creates video narratives that question our place in a changing world. Each year, from the last days of October, Mexico begins celebrating the Día de Muertos, a blend of pre-Hispanic heritage and Catholic tradition. Far from being sorrowful, this celebration, inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list, is experienced as an explosion of life: altars covered with offerings, garlands of marigolds, calaveras face paintings, vigils and processions… Families reunite with their departed loved ones. Their very own way of taming death and honoring those who are no longer here. Convinced that this ritual is a precious gateway into the Mexican soul, Comptoir des Voyages invited the photographer to set off in discovery of it, camera in hand. From this journey came images that tell as much of collective fervor as of family intimacy. We welcome you to the Éphémère Galerie at 12, rue Saint-Victor, Paris 5e, Opening reception on Thursday, October 29, from 6:00 to 8:30 pm From Friday, October 30 to Friday, November 6, from 2:00 to 6:30 pm On Saturdays October 31 and November 7, from 12:00 to 6:30 pm Closed on Sunday
