Watercolours and sepia ink drawings by Yanosh KALDY, architect, graphic artist Exhibition presentation For an architect, for a painter, Paris and its trees are sources of inspiration: parks, gardens, squares, avenues, secret little streets, school courtyards, discreet squares, cemeteries or shared gardens — every arrondissement strives to establish nature among the cobblestones, to raise trees between the buildings, to cultivate foliage that protects residents and moderates the climate. The tree, admired throughout the ages for its power, its substance and the nobility of its forms, is now — particularly in urban settings — recognised and respected for its regulating, protective and restorative virtues in the face of the many forms of pollution created by Man in less than two centuries. My paternal grandmother's house — in a small village in Transdanubia — stood 500 metres from a large state forest. As a child, I often went there to gather porcini mushrooms or to wander, to look at and listen to the trees in their natural setting, "at home"! As an adult, living in an urban environment — an artificial world — I notice the "humanising" contribution of trees. Our hyperactive society needs, more than ever, the Beauty, the serenity, the calm of trees. The tree inspired, and still inspires, our constructions, our Architecture: it is "the trunk, the body, the column" with its "branches, its arms, the ogive arches" of our cathedrals, but also the modern structures of contemporary architecture, organic architecture, timber framing or metal framing. I learned, empirically, through observation and by drawing them, that trees are as varied as human beings. Each tree has its own character; there are no two alike on Earth. Beauty in difference. Postscript Paris is one of the most wooded capitals in Europe. The tree heritage of Paris consists of: 100,000 street trees representing a linear length of about 700 km planted along the 1,650 public thoroughfares of Paris; 40,000 trees in the 490 municipal parks, gardens and squares; 30,000 trees in the 6 extramural cemeteries and the 14 intramural cemeteries managed by the Ville de Paris; 6,000 trees on the embankments of the boulevard périphérique; 7,000 trees in municipal school and early-childhood establishments, and 4,000 in sports facilities.
