The Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris presents Florian Krewer : woven thin*, the artist's first solo exhibition in France. Organized following the donation of several of the artist's works to the museum, this exhibition, at the heart of the collections' itinerary, offers an immersion into the pictorial universe of the German artist based in New York since 2020. Krewer's practice is deeply autobiographical, nourished by a direct confrontation with the world around him, in all its raw beauty as well as its violence. Drawing both on his lived experience and his imagination, the gallery of characters that populates his ethereal landscapes and interiors is stripped of all context and seems to lead an autonomous existence. Dancers, performers, animals and solitary figures move through changing urban landscapes. They appear detached, as if freed from the gravity of the physical world and its social constraints. In this weightless universe, Krewer's paintings celebrate moments of intimacy and collective resilience amid a most often hostile environment. At the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris, sixteen recent monumental canvases are on display, some of them previously unseen. Hung in a tightly packed arrangement, they produce a dense pictorial panorama that reflects the intensity of the artist's practice. Florian Krewer (born in 1986 in Gerolstein, Germany) studied painting at the Kunstakademie de Düsseldorf. His recent institutional exhibitions include Nice Dog, M WOODS Museum, Beijing (2023); everybody rise, Aspen Art Museum (2023); and Es liebt Dich und Deine Körperlichkeit ein Verwirrter, Kunsthalle Düsseldorf (2022). His works are held in the collections of the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris; the Musée national d'art moderne - Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; and the Albertina Museum, Vienna. In 2022, Krewer received the Prix Jean-François Prat from the Bredin Prat endowment fund. He lives and works in the South Bronx, New York. The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue published by VeneKlasen gallery, scheduled for release in October 2026.
