Valérie John offers an exploration of indigo blue as matter, memory, and gesture. From Martinique to West Africa, her work weaves together identities and narratives in assemblages seen as sensitive traces of the past. The monographic exhibition "I telman nwè ki i blé (Si noir que cela en devient bleu)" presents Valérie John's creation since the 1990s and her return to Martinique, where she chose to establish her "atelier-œuvre." This act is then a commitment to "make work" while immersed within her environment and engaging with the translocal memory of the place, in a gesture of shifting identity construction. At the Palais de Tokyo, through assemblages of paper and textiles, installations, garments, objects, and books, the artist offers an immersion into the metamorphoses of indigo: an aesthetic and sensory experience ranging from the deepest blue tones to the most brilliant black.
