Le BAL

On the occasion of the Bicentenary of the birth of photography, LE BAL devotes an exhibition, for the first time, to a collection: that of the Wilson Centre for Photography, built by Michael and Jane Wilson. Through this rare ensemble of 120 prints, most of them vintage, the exhibition explores the sometimes troubled, sometimes luminous, always unstable link that unites the one who photographs with the one who is photographed. Fleeting encounter, premeditated encounter: from the snapshot to the collaborative staging, the exhibition questions the relationship that is forged, at the moment of the shot, between the photographer and their subject. What does the image reveal about the respective position of these two bodies? About their complicity, their face-to-face, the silent pact sealed by the gaze of one upon the appearance of the other? The exhibition highlights iconic works alongside lesser-known ones, from the 1920s to the present day, in a sensitive journey that favors echoes, affinities, and cross-contaminations between the images.
