EXTENSION The exhibition L'être et le néon is extended until Saturday, October 3 L'être et le néonBetween France, the United States and Japan, Julie Glassberg captures gestures of freedom, resistance and self-affirmation. Through dance or the road, her photographs reveal the vitality of those who reinvent their presence in the world. Painting one's truck with flamboyant motifs, dancing every week despite the weight of years, building improbable bicycles for anarchic jousts: so many ways of reclaiming one's space and identity. The artist is interested in communities that transform everyday life into a language, individuals who invest an object not for what it is in itself, but for what it represents within their universes. Her photographs reveal lives built through action, where the gaze of others has no hold, where freedom is fully lived, in movement and individual affirmation. Conceived as an immersive experience, L'être et le néon draws the visitor into the heart of these singular worlds: sounds, testimonies and settings extend the energy and spirit of the images. The itinerary begins on the ground floor with STAYIN' ALIVE and its world of tea dances. It continues in the small upstairs room with the raw energy of BLACK LABEL BIKE CLUB, before ending in the large room with the discovery of the spectacular Japanese DEKOTORAS trucks. A photographic and human experience where each image bears witness to an act of freedom. Curator: Marta Russoli ; Credits: Joanna Starck Julie Glassberg - ArtistJulie Glassberg is a French photographer based in Paris. After studying graphic arts, she moved to New York to fully devote herself to her passion: photography. Her work focuses on exploring the diversity of cultures, subcultures, underground scenes and figures on the margins of society. During seven years in New York, she regularly collaborated with The New York Times and produced, from 2011 to 2015, the portraits for the weekly column Character Study, in tandem with journalist Corey Kilgannon. Her work has also been published in numerous international publications such as The New York Times Magazine, Le Monde, The Wall Street Journal, CNN, Le Monde Diplomatique, El País Semanal, Stern View, L'Équipe Mag. She then continued her journey in Asia: a year in Japan, where she developed new projects and collaborations with local artists, followed by a six-month residency at the Swatch Art Peace Hotel in Shanghai. Back in France, she continues to explore the margins through her documentary projects. Her work has been recognized with several prizes and grants, including the Lucie Scholarship Emerging Grant, the Getty Images Grant for Editorial Photography, a POYi award of excellence and an International Photography Award. Her first book, Bike Kill, was shortlisted by Paris Photo / Aperture. In 2022, she was awarded the Grande Commande de Photojournalisme led by the BnF with her project Stayin' Alive. Marta Russoli - Exhibition CuratorA graduate in philosophy of art and sociology from Université Paris-Sorbonne, Marta Russoli explores through her work as an exhibition curator the links between image, thought and social dynamics. Her interest in photography rests on its ability to articulate these three dimensions, as a medium that is at once documentary, experimental and conceptual. Currently curator and coordinator for the Biennale de l'Image Tangible, she is committed to highlighting photographic practices that push the boundaries of the medium, between materiality, process and perception. She also designed the exhibition Les Temps des Choses at Galerie Plateforme, questioning the relationship between image and temporality through different approaches to photography. She currently works as co-curator of the general exhibition for the virtual museum MuseAlps, a European project between France and Italy, dedicated to promoting and networking the artistic and cultural heritage of the Alps.
