Musée de l'Homme

This new exhibition to discover at the Musée de l'Homme is the result of a meeting between Samuel Pavard, biodemographer and aging specialist at the Muséum, and Nikos Aliagas, photographic artist. This exhibition, at the crossroads of art and science, sets out to shed light on old age as a biological, demographic and social reality, through a series of photographs. Behind the lens, the artist Nikos Aliagas captures scenes of everyday life and creates striking portraits. Some of his most beautiful photographs, combined with the scientific reflections of researcher Samuel Pavard, can be discovered in the Foyer Germaine Tillion (250 m²). By bringing together their perspectives—both lucid and delicate—on old age, the exhibition invites us to reflect on our relationship with time, on the place we give to elderly people in our societies, and on the bonds that different generations weave between one another. It compares human longevity to that of the rest of the living world and sheds light on the fundamental role played by the elderly throughout the history of our species in its cognitive, social and cultural evolution. As new age groups emerge today, illustrated by the growing proportion of centenarians and beyond, the exhibition questions the complex reality of life at advanced ages as well as the new representations of old age in our contemporary societies. Finally, by highlighting the link between the question of old age and the health of our planet, it reaffirms the legitimacy of our collective desire to live longer lives despite a world facing brutal environmental changes.
