As part of the Retrospective “William Klein: Films, etc.”, this screening invites you to (re)discover the film “Who Are You, Polly Maggoo?” by William Klein. Who Are You, Polly Maggoo? 98 minutes, 1966 Directed by William Klein Film screened in 35mm In the imaginary series of programs Who Are You?, Polly Maggoo is the mock portrait of the top model. In this first feature film, William Klein has fun creating a fake documentary, with the devastating satirical humor for which he is known. The central character of Polly, played by the model Dorothy McGowan, attracts the covetousness and ambitions of the small world buzzing within the universe of fashion and media. Klein, who has just slammed the door on French television, and who will soon stop working for Vogue, thus settles some scores along the way with these circles that he knows well. He pins down, all mixed together, the society press star and her snobbish followers, the television journalists (Philippe Noiret and Jean Rochefort), the prince reigning over an operetta kingdom who wants to marry Polly, the designer of unwearable metal dresses… Several real personalities of the time must have rightly felt targeted by the film's caricature. While being visually linked to the effervescence of the sixties, the film remains topical and corrosive today.
