Ready for a 140-million-year journey following the tracks of Cretaceous dinosaurs? Follow the daily life of paleontologists on an excavation site, and learn more about the extraordinary discoveries of the famous paleontological site of Angeac-Charente! A unique heritage to discoverThe paleontological collections of the Musée d'Angoulême are on display in the Grande Galerie de l'Évolution of the Muséum! Did you know that it is in this region, Aquitaine, that one of the largest dinosaurs known in the world was discovered? 140 million years ago, the north of Aquitaine was covered with marshes, lagoons and waterways. Since the early 2000s, paleontological research has revealed in Charente and Charente-Maritime fossil ecosystems rich in fauna and flora from the end of the Jurassic and the beginning of the Cretaceous. The Musée d'Angoulême thus houses remarkable paleontological collections from these discoveries: more than 10,000 identified bones, 70,000 bone fragments and 80,000 microremains (bones smaller than 10 mm), mainly from dinosaurs and crocodiles. It is the finest Lower Cretaceous paleontological ensemble existing in Europe. The exhibitionWhere do we find dinosaurs? How does a paleontological excavation site work? And afterwards, with what tools do paleontologists prepare fossils? How do they study the specimens collected in the laboratory? By going through the exhibition Sur les traces des dinosaures, immerse yourself in this vanished environment where crocodiles, turtles, fish, small mammals and herds of dinosaurs lived. Discover a unique group of paleontological sites in France, stretching from the île d'Oléron to Angeac-Charente. Skeletons, landscape reconstruction, film, so many elements for a great journey at the boundary between the Jurassic and the Cretaceous! (Re)discover specimens from the collections of the Muséum, in resonance with the collections of the Musée d'Angoulême. Along the way, also admire the illustrations of Pierre Mazan. The comic book author has illustrated, every year since its opening, the behind-the-scenes of the Angeac-Charente excavations, which have become the largest dinosaur deposit in Europe.
